Hostile Environment Training
What Does a Hostile Environment Training Look Like?
Hostile environment does not necessarily mean war zones (though they are pretty hostile!) it can be anywhere that takes a person or group out of their comfort zone. Extremes of temperature, difficult terrain, a lack of medical facilities all make a region hostile to us and training for travel and work in such areas makes good sense.
Sadly, the UK is not immune and, while not a hostile environment in general, organisations should have contingency plans in place to manage a range of crises. Terrorist attacks on mainland Europe have shown that determined individuals and groups are capable of putting together coordinated and highly complex attacks. In addition, lone wolf style attacks are becoming more common and understanding how to react to them is essential.
Courses vary in length and content depending on your destination and your experience. There is absolutely no need for an experienced member of staff to spend four or five days going over what they already know.
Many companies and organisations require their staff to have undergone the training for insurance purposes. However, providing the training for people who travel to unusual, dangerous or unstable places is the right and sensible thing to do. Things change and for the more experienced traveller the situation in the place you visited a few months or years ago may be completely different today.
A good booking form will ask where you are going and what your experience is. The course will include a section on how to find information about your destination, beyond the usual websites that is. At your request, we can do some research for you and, where possible, offer some contact details for trusted operators working in your area.
Here is an example of the content we can cover on your course:
- Context analysis
- Threats & risk assessment
- Casualty assessment
- Medical – starting with the basics, where needed, moving to the most relevant according to your destination
- Security planning & preparation
- Medical planning
- Situational awareness

- Civil disturbance/riots
- Weapons, ordinance, IEDs reaction to events
- Kidnap avoidance
- Car jacking
- What to take with you; clothing, equipment etc.

- Crisis planning & management
- Building and running an operations room

The content and length of time can be adjusted according to the factors already mentioned. However, in addition to this, we consult with our clients before the course and include or remove subject matter as required. If, for example, you would prefer more training on vehicle convoy planning and less on weapons and ordinance we can work out the right ratio for you.
Learning the theory is important and practicing the skills you have learned is vital. Each subject is taught using a variety of different teaching techniques, but with an emphasis on the practical. Subjects are combined in a series of mini-exercises which happen throughout the course. We find this works better than combining everything in one large exercise, where tiredness can affect the learning process. Equally, we make sure that everyone gets involved and plays a part throughout the training. The content and length of time can be adjusted according to the factors already mentioned.
